Peggy got home from work just after Mason had changed out of his suit. Ned was on a work call in the office, so it didn’t seem like he’d be cooking anytime soon. Mason went into the kitchen to assess what food they had available, pulling open cupboards and sticking his head into the refrigerator.
“Any dinner ideas?” he asked as Peggy walked in the kitchen.
“There should be lots of veggies in there. Stir-fry?”
“Sounds good. I have some news about the mysterious Sherri.”
“I have news too. Let me change, and we’ll talk.” Her hair was piled on her head in great loops, but wisps of it were starting to escape.
Mason pulled out the veggies that he guessed might be compatible with a stir-fry, and soon his roommates came in.
“You stir, I’ll chop,” Peggy said to Ned, who put on an apron. She set to work cutting vegetables, and Ned pulled out the wok and put it on the stove. Mason got out of the way and sat facing them from across the counter.
“How did it go at the shoe store?” Ned asked.
“Kind of great,” Mason said. “One of the clerks knew Sherri.”
“Really?” Ned looked skeptical. “So you actually got a valid lead from touching the woman’s necklace?”
“You really are psychic,” Peggy said, staring at him in astonishment.
“Not that you ever doubted it,” Mason said.
“So was Sherri a customer at the shoe store?” Peggy asked, ignoring Ned’s scowl.
“In a way,” Mason said. “She used to trade this clerk blow jobs for shoes.”
“You can do that?” she said, incredulous. “I wish I’d known that. I would have a lot more shoes right now.”
“That’s kind of sleazy,” Ned said. “Why would this guy admit that to you?”
“He thought I was working for someone else, maybe a gangster or somebody that she was mixed up with. I guess I ‘leaned on him,’ to use Peggy’s phrase.”
“Mason, that’s terrifying,” he said. “Do you really think it’s safe to be lying to people that might do you harm?”
“I didn’t pose as someone that I’m not. He kind of assumed I was dangerous, and I just didn’t correct him. So it’s not really scary, it’s just effective interview tactics.”
“But, I mean, you’re putting yourself in danger. Do you really want to be mixed up with that kind of thing?”
“No, but I’m already in it.” He decided not to tell them about getting chased up the street.
“Ned,” Peggy said, her hands full of sliced bok choy, “move it.” He stepped out of her way, and she dropped the bok choy into the wok, which hissed and popped. Peggy took over stirring.
“But it’s not some kid stealing from a church anymore,” Ned said. “It’s criminals and prostitutes. People who tend to be involved with firearms, which you don’t do, remember?”
“She wasn’t a prostitute; she just wanted shoes.”
“It’s just like Tintin,” Ned said, folding his arms across his chest. “You said it last week. He always said ‘I don’t use guns,’ but then there must be a dozen times where he’s walking around with a pistol or a rifle and shooting at people.
